Amsterdam Stag Do Guide
The default UK abroad-stag for a reason. Short flight, lots of beer, walkable city, brewery tours, canal boats and a city that knows how to handle stag groups. The areas, the activities that are actually allowed, the squad-tee playbook and the budget.
Amsterdam is the UK's default abroad-stag for solid reasons: 1-hour flight, walkable city, brewery culture built into the place, canal boats designed for groups, and a tolerant attitude towards stag groups (within limits — see "what's actually allowed" below). Stag groups rate it because it works for 3-night formats: arrive Friday afternoon, fly home Sunday afternoon, and you've packed in a brewery, a canal cruise, a beer-bike tour, two big nights and a Sunday brunch. The catch: Amsterdam has tightened rules on rowdy stag behaviour in the centre, particularly around the Red Light District. This guide covers what works, what doesn't, where to base, and the squad-tee playbook.
Sort the Groom First
Amsterdam crowds are dense (canals + cobbled streets + 200,000 tourists), so the groom needs to be findable. Personalised "Amsterdam Stag" tees with the groom's name on the back is the simplest answer. Black tee for the groom, white or grey for the squad — the city is muddy and the canals are dark, light tees photograph better.
Amsterdam Groom Tee
"Amsterdam Stag" front, name on back. Black or red base. Wears Friday afternoon to Sunday morning across brewery, beer bike, canal cruise, the night.
Shop Groom Tee →Best Man Tee
"Best Man" / "Captain" on the back. Identifies who's holding the booking confirmations and the group emergency phone.
Shop Best Man Tee →Pint Captain
Owns the beer bike, the brewery tour, the bar runs. Critical role — the squad's morale on day 2 hinges on this person.
Shop Squad Tees →Tour Guide
Has the city map, knows the brewery + canal boat schedule, doesn't get the squad lost in the canals. The MOH equivalent for stag groups.

Amsterdam
Amsterdam splits into stag-friendly areas with different vibes. The Red Light District is increasingly stag-hostile (police presence, no photos allowed, fines for rowdy groups). Pick your district carefully.
Leidseplein
The default stag base — concentrated bar district, multiple late-night clubs (Escape, Sugar Factory, Paradiso), 24-hour kebabs. Most stag-friendly area. Walk to most other districts in 15 minutes. Hotel here is the right move.
Shop Stag Outfits →Rembrandtplein
The classier nightlife square — premium cocktail bars, restaurants, clubs (Club Air, Escape). Smart-casual minimum at most clubs. Good for the one-night classier swap mid-stag.
Shop Stag Night Looks →Jordaan
The chill area — local bars, brown cafés, canal-side restaurants. Best for daytime activities and the recovery-brunch Sunday. Worth a 2-hour wander on Saturday afternoon for the photos.
Shop Stag Outfits →Red Light District (De Wallen)
Walk through, don't drink there. Photo restrictions are strict. Police actively fine rowdy stag groups. Tour groups are now banned from many streets after 7pm. Most stag groups touring Amsterdam now skip it entirely — better venues for drinking are 5 minutes' walk away.

The Amsterdam
Stag Stack
A reliable Amsterdam stag stacks one major daytime activity per day with the bar/club nights. These are the ones that consistently work.
🍺 Heineken Experience
The Heineken brewery tour, central Amsterdam. 90-minute group tour with tasting. Photographs hard, sets the tone for day 1, books online. £25 pp.
🚲 Beer Bike
The 12-person pedal-powered bar. 90-minute guided route around the canals. The single most-photographed Amsterdam stag activity — banned in some central streets but still legal in routes outside. Book a private operator. £25-40 pp.
⛵ Canal Boat (Booze Cruise)
Private canal boat charter for stag groups — 2-hour cruise with bar. Several operators run "stag-friendly" cruises. £40-60 pp split. Excellent Saturday-afternoon move.
🍔 Brewery Tour (Brouwerij 't IJ)
The independent windmill brewery. More interesting than Heineken if anyone in the squad is actually into beer. East Amsterdam, 15-min tram from Leidseplein. £35-50 pp.
🔫 Escape Room / Lasertag
The "we should do something other than drink" daytime option. Multiple operators in Amsterdam do stag packages. 90 minutes, photographs hard, gets the squad on the same wavelength.
🏟️ Ajax / Football Match
Johan Cruijff Arena. Group bookings if you can align with a home game. The post-match tram back to Leidseplein is a stag-classic moment.
🍻 Bar Crawl (Leidseplein)
Bulldog → Café Reijnders → Sugar Factory → Escape. Saturday-night staple. Book Escape table for groups of 8+ — walk-up entry on weekends is unreliable.
🥞 Pancake Brunch (Sunday Recovery)
Pannenkoekenhuis Upstairs (tiny, atmospheric) or De Vier Pilaren. Hangover-friendly Dutch pancakes, fits the squad-tee aesthetic. Book a table for 8+ ahead.

What's Actually
Allowed (2026 Update)
Amsterdam has tightened stag rules since 2023. The old "anything goes" reputation isn't accurate any more. Things stag groups need to know.
✓ Still Fine
Beer bikes (in approved zones), canal cruises, brewery tours, Leidseplein bar crawls, Heineken Experience, escape rooms, football matches, smart-casual nightclubs.
⚠️ Restricted
Red Light District tour groups (banned at peak times), photographing sex workers (illegal, fined heavily), public drinking outside designated areas, beer bikes in some central streets, drinking on canal boats without licensed operator.
✗ Don't
Don't urinate in canals (literal fine + arrest). Don't use marijuana in non-coffeeshop areas (the rules tightened in 2024). Don't argue with police about stag rules — they've heard it. Don't book "Red Light District tours" — most are now operating in grey zones and groups get fined.

Shop Stag CollectionAmsterdam Stag FAQs
Are stag groups still welcome in Amsterdam?
Yes, broadly — but with limits. Beer bikes, canal cruises, brewery tours, Leidseplein bars are all stag-friendly. The Red Light District has tightened rules since 2024 (no photos, no rowdy tour groups, fines for public drinking). Most stag groups now skip the RLD entirely and concentrate on Leidseplein.
How long should the stag be?
3 nights is the sweet spot (Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon). 2 nights is too rushed. 4+ nights blows the budget on Amsterdam pricing. The 3-night format lets you do beer bike + brewery + canal cruise + 2 big nights + Sunday recovery.
When is the cheapest time to go?
February–April (post-Christmas, pre-Kings Day). Avoid: Kings Day (April 27), Pride (early August), New Year, ADE festival weekend (October). Those weekends see hotel prices triple.
Can we wear our squad tees in nightclubs?
Leidseplein bars/clubs (Sugar Factory, Bulldog, Escape) — yes. Rembrandtplein premium clubs (Club Air) — no, smart-casual minimum. Pack a smart-casual swap if doing both districts.
Where to base?
Leidseplein. 5-min walk to most stag bars, 15-min walk to Heineken Experience, 10-min tram to Ajax. NH Hotels, Park Hotel, Apollo Hotel are reliable for stag groups. Avoid hotels in or adjacent to the Red Light District unless cheap is the only criterion.
How early should we order squad tees?
2-3 weeks before the flight. Personalised printing isn't instant. UK-printed by us, named per person, ships to one address before you travel.
